Chapter Seventeen

Caroline

“They’re ruined!” Lena cried out. “Look at this. My babies can’t wear these things.”

Julia and I both cringed at the mouse-eaten christening gowns with telltale yellow and brown stains. The mice had not only eaten the old clothes, they’d used them as their toilet. They stunk to high heaven.

“The christening is in a week!” Lena exclaimed. “These were supposed to be special.”

“You can always buy new gowns,” Julia assured her. “It’s not a big deal.”

“These were passed down through Sean’s family,” she pouted. “Dammit. Obviously, I could just buy them gowns, but I wanted them to be special.”

Lena never really got emotional. I felt bad for her. She was really upset by the situation. “I could make them,” I offered. “They won’t have history, but thirty years down the road when they are baptizing their own babies, they can say their godmother made them. It’ll be a new piece of history.”

Julia and Lena looked at each other. Julia shrugged. “I think that’s a good idea,” she said. “They’ll be special even if they aren’t old.”

“And my babies wouldn’t be wearing some hundred-year-old clothes that smell like shit,” Lena muttered. “Are you sure you have time to do it?”

“I’ll have to do a little research but it’s just basic white gowns, right?” I asked. “They aren’t going to be big. I think I can handle it. It’s been a long time since I’ve sewn anything, but it’s good. It’s the distraction I need.”

“I would love you forever.” Lena smiled. “Thank you! What do you need for me to do?”

“Tell me what you want and I’ll do my best to make it happen,” I said.

Lena thought about it for a few seconds. “The gowns should be identical but unique at the same time.”

I nodded. “Okay, yes, I can do that.”

“And of course, there isn’t a budget.” Lena grinned. “Only the finest for our babies.”

I laughed. “Yeah, I’ll let you know how much the fabric is before I buy it.”

“Let me get you some money,” she said. “And do not think you’re not charging us.”

I went to my room in Julia’s house and got busy. I was excited about the project. I started working on the design in my head before searching online. I found a pattern and downloaded it. Then I carefully selected the materials. I wanted the gowns to be elegant, comfortable, and they had to fit the babies perfectly.

I was going to use delicate white silk and lace with tiny pearls and diamonds to the dresses to make them special. Amelia’s would have more lace to give it a little femininity. I couldn’t wait to make my vision come to life. But there was just one little issue. I wasn’t about to hand-sew the dresses. My sewing machine was at the apartment. The last thing I wanted to do was see Freddie, but I needed my machine. I supposed I could call Leo to go with me, but that would probably end up with me yelling at him and him kissing me again.
